Adaptive Reuse

 

Adaptive reuse of existing buildings is one of our best options to increase sustainability and resiliency in the built environment. Increasingly, public and private owners are embracing conversion projects to reduce the environmental impacts of constructing and operating their buildings. While, in recent years, economic and social shifts have made these projects more financially attractive, adaptive reuse is nothing new for us.

WJE has nearly seventy years of collective experience evaluating existing structures and designing efficient strengthening modifications and related upgrades to give unused or underused building assets new life. We’re experts in design, peer review, and commissioning of enclosure systems for all types of enclosure systems—from waterproofing to cladding to windows and curtain walls to roofing—and are well-versed in the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation of Historic Structures. Our project managers regularly collaborate with large teams and work closely with our clients, helping them navigate the complexities of adaptive reuse projects to achieve their environmental, energy, performance, and carbon-reduction goals.
