Webinar Recording -- What's Wrong with My Stucco and How Can I Repair It?

Stucco is a field-applied cladding material installed on a wide variety of buildings, from wood-framed, single-family and multi-family residential to concrete-framed commercial buildings. Although design, material, and application requirements have been outlined in industry standards for decades, wide variations in architectural detailing, material selection, plasterer skill, and curing practices continue to affect the as-built performance of stucco cladding, often resulting in cracking, displacement, staining, and water leakage. Because multiple factors are typically involved, a thorough investigation is needed to determine the root cause of these conditions before appropriate repairs can be developed.

In this webinar, WJE stucco experts Mike Horst, Kirk Moss, and Bryan Rouse provide an overview of stucco construction, identify common types of distress, describe potential causes of that distress, and outline repairs to address the underlying conditions. The presentation focuses on the history and background of stucco construction and highlights the differences between stucco applied to lath and stucco bonded directly to masonry or concrete, using case studies to examine potential causes and repairs for various distress conditions.

By the end of the presentation, you will be able to:

  • Differentiate between the two primary types of stucco construction
  • Identify common stucco conditions requiring further investigation or repair
  • Explain potential causes of stucco distress
  • Review and evaluate the potential effectiveness of proposed repairs

Attendees are eligible for one American Institute of Architects (AIA) HSW Learning Unit.
